Exploring Orthodox Monasticism to nourish your spirit, mind and soul

Embarking on a journey through Orthodox Monasticism offers a profound opportunity to nourish not just the body, but also the spirit, mind, and soul. Delve into the well-preserved spiritual traditions of monastic life and engage in a travel experience that transcends mere tourism to embrace social responsibility.

Orthodox Monasticism, rooted in ancient Christian practice, entails a deliberate withdrawal from the bustling world, allowing individuals to devote themselves wholly to a life of self-sustenance, prayer, and the pursuit of union with Jesus Christ. Dating back to the 4th century A.D., this venerable tradition remains an integral aspect of our living heritage.

Nestled amidst the serene landscapes of southeast Attika, near Lavrion, lies the Monastery of St. Paul the Apostle. Here, amid groves of olive, lemon, orange, peach, and apricot trees overlooking the sea, one discovers a sanctuary where the fervent pursuit of inner peace and spirituality is palpable.

During my three-day sojourn within this sacred haven, I embarked on a journey of self-reflection and introspection, delving deep into my core values and beliefs. Immersed in the daily rhythms of monastic life, I dedicated myself wholeheartedly to serving alongside the four resident nuns.

Through this immersive experience, I gleaned invaluable insights into the disciplined lifestyle of the nuns, witnessing firsthand their unwavering commitment to both the tenets of the church and their personal vows of poverty, chastity, stability, and obedience. Beyond their spiritual duties, the nuns diligently tend to the monastery’s upkeep and cultivate a small organic garden, nurturing olive trees, fruit-bearing varieties, and medicinal herbs.

As an ardent lover of nature, I eagerly participated in these tasks, relishing the opportunity to harvest and process wild herbs while engaging in enriching conversations with the nuns. Their tales of past struggles, influences, and the monastery’s profound impact on the surrounding community served as a source of inspiration and enlightenment.

The Monastery of St. Paul stands as a beacon of solace amidst life’s tumult, offering respite from the frenetic pace of modern existence. Here, amidst a harmonious blend of communal contribution and personal reflection, one discovers a sanctuary where inner tranquility is nurtured and cherished.
