In October 2023, Terra Santa orchestrated a captivating expedition through the uncharted territories of Peloponnese, delving deep into the heart of lesser-explored communities.
Our expedition wasn’t merely about sightseeing; it was a quest to forge genuine connections with these small communities, to unravel their rich tapestry of history, customs, and everyday life, all while engaging in meaningful discussions about the impact of tourism on their local economies. While these villages might not be on the mainstream tourist radar, they offer discerning travelers an unparalleled opportunity for sustainable and culturally immersive exploration.
Commencing our journey in the quaint town of Areopolis on the mesmerizing Messinian Gulf, our path meandered through the enchanting locales of Limeni, Gerolimenas, and Vathia, each unveiling its own story against a backdrop of breathtaking landscapes. The subsequent day saw us marveling at the awe-inspiring natural wonders of the Caves of Diros, where we also had the privilege of engaging with a local Kritamo producer, delving into the historical and health significance of this indigenous plant.
Venturing further into the heart of Sparta’s villages, particularly Karyes, we found ourselves immersed in a world steeped in rich history and tradition. Our encounters with the timeless Plane Trees of Menelaus, nestled beside the venerable Church of Panagia, offered a glimpse into the enduring legacy of the region. Locals warmly welcomed us, generously sharing insights into their local economy, proudly showcasing an array of artisanal products ranging from chestnuts and walnuts to the finest olive oil and traditional cheeses. Surrounded by verdant chestnut and walnut groves, Karyes served as an idyllic gateway to the pristine hiking trails of Mount Parnonas.
Our expedition culminated in the picturesque village of Kastanitsa, nestled serenely on the southern slope of Mount Parnon. Renowned for its illustrious chestnut production, Kastanitsa comes alive every late October with the revival of its ancient chestnut festival, a cherished local tradition dating back to the late 18th century. This annual celebration attracts visitors from far and wide, offering a captivating glimpse into the vibrant cultural heritage of the region.
